I hate the way some rugby fans dislike football because 'the players dive and complain to the ref all the time' as if that's all there is to football.
Sometimes listening to people and the media you'd think football was a game where the winner was who swore at the ref the most, not who scored the most goals.

I'd say that it's more of a dig at the England football team. For years, players have been only to preparted to 'talk the talk' when a major tournament comes around. However when it comes down to business they can't walk the walk, consistently. Moreover, I'd also suggest the the spirit of the rugby team is such that they'd pretty much die for each other. I haven't seen that an in England football team for a long time - if at ever ?
How many weeks a year do the rugby team spend together? Five games of the six nations, summer tours to the southern hemisphere, autumn internationals. England players probably play as many games for England as they do for their clubs. The England football team play 12ish games a year, between that they're competing against one another for their clubs. It's hardly going to build the same bond is it?
Don't get me wrong, I've been really impressed with the rugby team. But I don't see why we should automatically compare them unfavourably with our fairly competant football team. I mean, they've won the last five competitive games 3-0. What more do they want?!

tbf it is hardly a small part of the game and is a completely alien concept to a rugby fan.
Hence the continual reference.

If they really thought that, they'd get their news values prioritised instead of complete saturation of football stories and non-stories. All this bandwagoning bullshit will be gone within a few months.
Also, FO to The Times.

Not all for comparing the sports, but it does annoy me when footballers go on as though they have been shot in the head, where as rugby players will do whatever they can to make it look as though they are fine when they have been piledrived into the ground
