An 'is this laptop OK' thread
Right, apologies if there is already a thread, had a look and couldn't see one, might be a good idea to do one and put a link at the top of the forum?
Ideally I need a laptop so I can do uni work, I need to be able to use wireless internet in my room, then take it to uni on the train and work in lectures/the library, and play old stuff like Civ 3/CM01-02, I don't really need a supercomputer, I wanted to spend about £400-450 and have it last for the 4 years I'll be at uni. Oh and I'm not very hot with computer specs, so i don't know whether AMD is better or worse that Intel, and all the stuff about graphics cards confuses me.
Anyway, after not very exhaustive research (i.e. asking a IT worker friend and him saying try Dell) i found this page,

he suggested I buy the one on the right, is it £80 better than the one on the left?
Is Dell the best place to look? Have you recently bought one similar? Am I going to be able to play recent games on it?
I throw myself at the mercy of people who know anything about laptops, as I know sod all, cheers.

Listen it's pointless asking OTF as they'll just tell you how great or **** their laptops are and has no bearing on what's right for you and doesn't provide a decent overview. Just go out to the newsagents and spend a few hours browsing through the PC magazines. You can check out the porn for light relief when it all gets too much.

providing all you want it for is for internet and wordprocessing those should all do the job, as far as i can tell, the only difference seems to be the processor, so it's up to you really

Well yes he could stick and extra 1Gb of RAM on the Inspiron 6400 and upgrade the graphic card for a price still around £500.
