When wanting to rent something like "Prison Break, Series 1, Part 1"

And its 4 discs, do they just send you 1 disc at a time? (So 1/2 episodes?)

Yes. And they're intelligent enough to send you the discs in order, so they won't send you disc 3 or 4 before you've seen the first disc.

Coincidentally that's the exact disc I sent back today

Not sure how it works with something like Prison Break, where the season is in two boxsets - i.e. they might send you Season 1 Part 2, Disc 1 - I've kept the second half of the series off my list until I'm done with the first one.
