4GB RAM is pretty much pointless.
And if you want Vista to run like a 3-legged dog, get the 5400RPM hard drive!

Once we know that then we can start to find suitable models for a nominal fee.
| Yeah I would definitly be looking for a 17" screen for DVD's and would use youtube often.
Will be playing FM2008 and FM Live which I think are best played on a fast, high memory machine.
Wouldn't really be downloading much and at the moment I wouldn't be editing photos/videos but might get more into that in the future.
I first started looking at the Dell one I mentioned above because they say it's designed to be the most powerful laptop around for gaming etc and then asked in a Sony shop do they have one with similar specs and the guy picked that one out, so for some reason i've convinced myself these are the only two to go for which is probably miles from the truth!?
I just feel if im going to buy a laptop I should go for one of the top models as it will last longer and perform better and in the long run mean I wont have to buy another one for ages!

I'd get a Dell personally because when I got a Sony Vaio I had to keep the charger in at all times meaning I couldn't take it many places, It was slow and my little brother hit it off the door in my room and the keyboard thingy on it fell off!

| Not really. Most Dells are sold at a loss. They make their money on support contracts for businesses.

Dell are pretty poor quality.
If it were me, I'd go for a 15.4" ThinkPad T60/T61, if it must be 17" I'd go with HP, no way would I go Dell or Acer.

The_Fish is the biggest IBM fanboy in OTF.
Although i do agree with him about the 17" HP. One of my animator has one and it wasnt expensive.

| The Dell is designed as a desktop replacement for 3D gaming. The Sony has a bluray drive driving up the price. 17" with Core 2 Duo 2.00GHz or 2.2Ghz processor and 2GB of RAM will be fine for your needs. Also buying a top model latop expecting it to last is the wrong thing to do. You are better buying midrange now and midrange in the future.
There will be quad core notebooks with much faster graphics cards, faster and larger hard drives and other faster components, much cheaper HD-DVD or blurray drives within a year. Making whatever you buy obselete.
