The French are fb. Without them we'd only have the Scots as bitter rivals which would be frankly embarassing.

Because a country of our prestige deserves a proper rival, not one that popped over the border when we were otherwise engaged (in France usually), then scurried back whenever the likes of Edward III went up to give them a kicking.
