They boasted 26 three-starred restaurants in the 2005 Michelin Guide. However, the guide is a French institution. Could that be why the UK had only three? Coincidence, non?
It's neither coincidence nor down to the Michelin being French, but a fair reflection of reality.

As mentioned in the local food thread - the English would be hard pressed to claim our food is better than French food, without raising guffaws of laughter.

True, but tbf, that doesn't mean there can't be some excellent restaurants. Of course I doubt they're serving home-style cooking.

Well one restaurant in England with a Michelin Star is owned by Raymond Blanc... a Frenchman!
The Fat Duck was ranked best restaurant in the world in 05 and came 2nd 3 times over the past 4 years yet it's in England and the Chef is... from the London area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fat_Duck
