We were shown it in RE when I was in school and I must say I didn't think much of it (they fast-forwarded the 'bad' bits...)
Bought it last year and it is very affecting, if anything its low production values (by today's standards) makes it seem a lot more stark. One of the most depressing films I've ever seen, everyone should watch it.

Is its impact not reduced now? It's original showing in the early 80's had huge impact because a nuclear war actually seemed like a real possibility... some even thought it was inevitable.

Watched it again a couple of months back.
No, the impact has not been reduced. The possibility hasn't been reduced either, just the possibility it'll happen to us.

| Which is what I meant really. Things have a greater resonance if the threat that they can happen to you exists.

They do point out in it that a single attack such as the one in Sheffield would overwhelm the entire NHS, even were the NHS not damaged in the attack. The aftermath might not be so severe, no. But the possibility is still very much there.

Well ok I agree it does still exist, but the threat was greater, at least in the public consciousness in the early 80's.
Of course I was a kid then so that certainly would impact on my perception.

| I remember asking my dad if we'd survive.
"Fook no you little twat, we live right on top of a major port"
oh
Shouldn't really say stuff like that to a 10 year old.
