Tips are defo use the trains, superb. Trains are 'named' and dont always make it clear where they go. i.e. "the whatver express" is from Delhi to Calcutta so it's not obvious unless you ask about.
You can get a train timetable really cheap. very VERY useful for planning ahead too, times and things. Like that when i was there anyway
rajdhani express. iv taken the trains in india quite often (although last time i did was about 10 yrs ago). not much has changed tho. get a sleeper, see if you can get one of the little tiers to urself.

I always went top bunk. Can put your stuff up there during the day and then bit of space for sleeping, away from the crowds. Some people find it a little closed in up there but i like my own space
Middle bunk is a no-no and bottom will just mean everyone will try to skank onto your sleeper
