seriously have to be booked way in advance? was reading on LP that the day before is good, although you can still get train tickets on the day

If you want to travel overnight/ long distance, then advanced booking is a must.
Short hop journeys then there's no need.

If you want to travel India at those times, make sure you're going South to North to avoid the monsoons (although they didn't hit until late may last year).

Have lots of cool places to go to and hostels to stay in.

my dad cycled all the way to india a few years ago. that was cheap. get invited into peoples houses for food and drink along the way.

Did it ages ago in the 90s. Alot has changed no doubt.

Tips are defo use the trains, superb. Trains are 'named' and dont always make it clear where they go. i.e. "the whatver express" is from Delhi to Calcutta so it's not obvious unless you ask about.

You can get a train timetable really cheap. very VERY useful for planning ahead too, times and things. Like that when i was there anyway
