Default The power of the English media *potential spoilers*

First off - have chucked in the spoilers bit as some poster may not yet know the result of England's game tonight.

Will be interesting to see how the media react to England's defeat against Russia tomorrow. Will they go after Maclaren, the players, the referee. The tabloids will more than likely go after the manager and should England not qualify for Euro 2008 then surely they will make his position untenable ? I remembering them pretty much bringing down Graham Taylor's job as England boss, and also having a damn good go at Sir Bobby Robson during his tenure. More recently, they wrote of the England rugby team after the 36-0 horsing off South Africa, only to be forced to eat humble pie when they turned it around.

However, it's not just sport where the media have influence. They can pretty much bring down a government, or push to elect a new one - they can push for law changes. They can also stoke up controversy based on what's fashionable this week (immigration being popular at the moment) and also the old favourite of building someone up, only to delight in knocking them down at a later time.

The media have a degree of power over all of our lives, as in what we see and hear. What you make of that is up to you of course - but there are those who believe pretty much everything that is spoon fed to them. Particularly when it concerns an emotive issue which can hit close to home for most folk.

Guess what I'm asking is that whilst there influence has grown since the advent of the internet, etc - will it continue to grow in the years to come - and will it be they who call the shots rather than the government ? I've spoken about the influence before of a certain Rupert Murdoch. Are the warnings there for all to see ? I believe their influence will grow stronger and perhaps also become more belligerent in the quest for control.

I don't think the internet has advanced the media's power much at all tbh.

They won't say a thing about Rooney. Not after his goal, and the penalty was never a penalty.

Robinson on the other hand may well be lynched.

the pitch? The English team have now played on it as many times as some of the Russians.

I disagree. It's become another huge vehicle for what information people read/see.
