Salford is one of the few sizeable cities in the UK not to have a professional soccer team, it does have a non-league club, North West Counties League side Salford City.
The nearest professional football team to Salford is Manchester United, situated just across the Quays in Trafford, and many people from Salford are avid Manchester United fans and are colloquially referred to as "Salford Reds", not to be confused with the local rugby team of the same name.

Covers a big area, but that's due to all the Millionaires with 10 mile gardens.

But yeah, if you are looking at owns of 17k or whatever as suggestions, then Farnham easily bigger and the team is in a league no one has ever heard of.

Alton Town (my team  ) are now in a similar position (used to be in the Athenian League which is now probably the Ryman league). Alton has a population of 17k, but we do play FA Cup qualifiers I think.

| The Athenian League was made up of a mixture of teams that are now in the Ryman League such as Harrow, Billericay and Dulwich Hamlet as well as some teams from the Essex Senior League and surrounding leagues around London, it was really a feeder league to the Isthmian and was really phased out as the Isthmian League added more divisions and admitted clubs from the Athenian League as well as other leagues, I think that's right anyway.
As for the Ryman League it used to be called and really still is called the Isthmian League.
