Do the vanilla tutorial first to get the basics.

I played vanilla for quite a time and enjoyed it, but after modding up I wouldn't go back. I'd do vanilla until you get bored of it, then go AGCEEP. Though it's down to your personal preferences really.

Oh, and the vital thing to do at the start is set any important looking message to 'display in a box and pause'. It's tedious but worth it, otherwise you end up forgetting about armies and not realising a neighbour declared war on you a year back until he takes your capital.
