Try Knights of Honor for the same type of game, but at a faster pace. In Crusader Kings I got fed up waiting for anything to happen.
| I loved CK but never could enjoy playing KoH, it just random for me and i never actually "felt" i was a medieval ruler. </BLOCKQUOTE>
I think that's a fair comment in that KoH felt like it was more about the dynasty and the familial relationships than the management of your kingdom. I've always thought that CK was the more epic of the two, but by the same token it was also the more intimidating, and I never could find a good introductory tutorial.
Aside from the two mentioned and the Total War series, does anyone know of any other dynasty-building games where you're controlling a family and trying to make it prosper from generation to generation? </BLOCKQUOTE>
Would be great if it really was a great dynasty game, but couldnt see it in KoH, too. Just didnt get into it, when i saw the few playable countries and that Germany was only one big realm i already turned the game off.

Great news! CK is awesome, but in need of an expansion or sequel.

Knights of honor was more like MII:TW than it was Crusader Kings. CK attempts to model aspects of Medieval life as best as a game can while KoH is more a typical RTS that uses a period as a basis, but doesn't attempt to model anything in a realistic way.
To any powerful medieval noble, increasing power and demesne was a huge issue, and providing for heirs (and having troublesome children through not being able to provide an inheritence was commonplace). Kings needed to balance granting out their demesne to loyal servents while having enough to maintain their own treasury, and not creating overmighty barons.
CK, while not being a perfect sim, makes about as good a stab at it as could be expected. A new version if they ever make it could implement greater complexity and then frankly, I'd never leave my PC and the gf might forget who I am!

I've got amazon vouchers to spend, so i thought i might spend part of it on a couple of budget games. Is this stillworth getting, or is it horribly out of date now?
I assume it's turn based rather than RTS?
And anymore news on the expansion? It was supposed to be this month, i believe?

It's quite hard to get hold of these days (does Amazon still sell it?).
Although I love this game it's a tough one to recommend simply because it's quite unique. It's not like a lot of strategy games where you're continually immersed in the game, managing towns and armies.
Crusader Kings attempts to model aspects that were relevant to medieval lords - creating a dynasty, heirs etc. This appeals to some and not to others (average gamers would probably be bored quite quickly).
It's probably the best game for creating Alternative History. If think that's often what appeals to it's fans.
It's not turned based btw. It's 'real time' (days pass by as you're doing your thing and the AI is doing it's thing at the same time).

As for "out of date" - it depends what you mean. Graphically it was out of date when it was released (2004) - but the graphics aren't a big deal and I wouldn't particular want them to change this (basically a huge 2D map of all the counties in Europe and North Africa).

| It says 2-4 weeks for delivery. It's only a fiver, so it looked quite a good way to make up to the £15 quid for free delivery, as most of their budget games are £10.
If it's not the pace of your standard RTS that suits me. I generally dislike 'strategy' games that rely more on how quickly you can move your mouse to give orders to your otherwise immobile and/or unthinking troops rather than the actual strategy you're employing.

For a fiver it's got to be worth taking a chance.
What you start off as in the game can affect the level of immersion. For example, starting as a Count in England needs a lot of patience as you wait for your opportunity to expand (through marriage, or maybe war). As a Duke or more so as a King - your opportunity for expansion is greater and you'll face more challenges.
It's a bit like FM - some people take the 'big club' route, some take the LLM route. Each gets a different type of game from their choice.
