I can't deny your description of it (although I would suggest that last week's audience was better than normal) and its need to be improved. Quite how, I'm unsure. Perhaps sending out a survey to prospective audience members about their views from which they could work out whether or not these people are complete half wits would improve it. In QT you have, at least, the bare bones of a very good and pretty important programme.
