For some reason my phone doesnt want to send a message to my mate in Japan (although i do receive hers). Anyone know them free sites that let you text, and will let me send one to Japan?

I tried a few but they all want you to sign up to their no doubt dodgy contract that charges your phone

Signing up is free and it doesn't use money or anything, but there is a limit on the amount you can use and I'm not sure whether you can text abroad.

My pal ios out there for a year, no idea how he's done it, but they use some kind of email address to send txts as they don't use sms that often apparently.

Actually on closer inspection they dont send to japan. Those tight japanese gits.

japanese phones can't receive texts, the use email via the i-mode network. You're right though, they can send send them for some weird reason.

I can email on my phone, but i thought that was just to other email addresses not to a phone as a text. Will try messing with it

I have the same problem texting my girlfriend in South Korea. I can read hers fine, but she can't receive mine.

It's not a Korean phone either

Depends which network.. Docomo is Imode, Au and softbank use different systems.
If they are with softbank, the SMS should work fine.

And no, the text messaging systems for the other operators are not compatible. Japan went its own way in the mobile technology field, which is why it advanced so quickly, collaborating with each other, but with no other country.

Europe collaborated which meant they have systems which are compatible wth each other.

The US went on a competition drive which meant no bugger was compatible with anyone else, which is why they fell behind.
