Hmmmmm - popularised perhaps. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Yeah I'd go along with popularised. Alice in Chains and Soundgarden to name a few were putting the 'grunge' sound out there before Nirvana.
I have often wondered, Now I do like Nirvana but a part of me and I have often had this discussion feels if Cobain didn't die as early they wouldn't be as 'popular' as they are.
Well I know that but they were at the height of success back then and there is a smack of overratedness about them. Cobain and Nirvana aren't as good as people like to proclaim.
It's hard to say but they were huge at the time - they had well and truly made it, and Cobain was a world-wide superstar. I think the mythos has been increased by his death, and maybe the longevity of their popularity.
But, they were recognised as an important band in terms of influence even before his death imo. It wasn't that they were any better than the others, they just managed to capture the imagination of the general music public... but that cerainly helped the Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Mudhoney bands amongst others as well... and also pseudo-'grunge' like Stone Temple Pilots.

music is subjective isn't it - it's like art - there are elements which demonstrate that something is of high quality, but once you get beyond a point, the aknowledgement of genius becomes more subjective.
It'd be hard to argue that Nirvana were not at least of a high quality - and their importance is virtually a given.

Kinda like Jim Morrison. I should point out when I am talking about Cobain being overrated I am talking about the people that have him as a martyr. Best song-writer ever and various other stuff

Oh I agree - that's going too far. Certainly very talented.
people do the same thing with Morrissey (despite the lack of death in that instance). He's a muse, a poet blah blah blah. He's a decent songwriter - but hey let's not go overboard.
