If the amber comes on and you're following the speed limit you should stop if it is safe to do so.

If the red comes on the amber has clearly already passed, and you're speeding through the lights.

If you get caught going through a red, you're nicked. Very few potential mitigations.

oh jesus... if you're following the speed limit and the lights change to amber when you're too close to stop, you'll go through on amber. if it changes to red before you go through, you would have had plenty of time and space to stop. simple as that

I suggest that you look at who made the comment, what he does for a living and reevaluate your attitude to driving before you have a serious accident or are sued into bankruptcy or worse still either kill yourself or someone else.

You need to study the highway code and perhaps have a refresher course because you were taught the right way to drive and have clearly forgotten how to.
