Default The ELO Fiber

This is not actually a thread, so I'm calling it a fiber of the Yes logo thread.

The Electric Light Orchestra had a very recognizable logo, just like Yes did. Welles kindly traced off the logo to Illustrator format for us---verrry accurate trace, Welles [righton] ...I tried it myself, and mine had far too many anchors.

Anyhow, so everyone can play, I took the liberty of:

? Converting Welles' file to Illustrator 3, so just about every app in Creation can import the logo,
? Importing it into a Xara document, so you can use Xara 3D if you like, and
? I embedded the paths, as separarte paths, in a Photoshop CS2 document, with maximum backward compatibility enabled, so you don't need the latest version of PS to work with the logo.

Incidentally, Welles has "ELO" on one layer, and then the individual glyphs on separate layers, so rotate away!

Trivia:
? Guitarist Jeff Lynn always wanted to be a Beatle; the influence in the music is obvious, but hey, we need new Beatle songs, IMO...
? Jeff sorta got his wish when he produced and sang backups on George Harrison's "I Got My Mind Set On You".
?Jeff went on to join The Traveling Wilbury's, again, singin' right next to George. The group was fronted by the late great Roy Orbison.
? "Electric Light Orchestra" doesn't refer to a lightbulb. A Light Orchestra is, well, a light orchestra...smaller than a regular orchestra and larger than a chamber ensemble. And Jeff's group happened to be composed of electric instruments, hence the name.

Okay, my submission was created on the Mac using PIXAR Showplace, and compiled and dithered to unrecognizability in ImageReady to get it down to <100K. The backward explosion effect was created by rendering the logo exploding, and then by reversing the frames using ImageReady.

My Best,

Gare

Dang, Gare! You've done it again. A large size fancy GIF under 100K.

I'm glad you could use those files. I learned a lesson about file saving for universal use and maximum compatibility. 8))

This treatment of the ELO logo was done in Illustrator (post-trace) and Photoshop (post-production). The 3D extrusion was an Illustrator plugin, Vertigo's PopArt. The background was Shinycore's PathStyler Pro. All else was Photoshop, mostly layer styles.

Default Wowee!

Nice one, Welles! [righton] [righton]

Hey, Vertigo's still making plug-ins, eh? I used to own "Dizzy" a few years back.

It's worth mentioning that Illustrator, both Mac and Win, CS and later, has encorporated Dimensions into the workspace. If you're not familiar with Dimensions, you can extrude or revolve (lathe) multiple paths into 3D objects. Additionally, because the paths remain vector until you export your work, you can scale the suckers as large as a house with no loss of original design information.

You can apply shiney attributes, use a wide-angle lens to distort your composition, map vector or bitmap art to the object's surface, and yep, you can animation your creation--create two objects, with, say, different rotation angles; use the Object Blend feature in Ill, and then export the multiple objects as image files, then use ImageReady to create a moving sequence. Pet Gripe: Dimensions, the defunct, standalone app, had a Generate Sequence feature, which made exporting animation frames a snap. Sadly, Illustrator didn't adopt this handy util. [size=9px]...*sigh*[/size]

Here's a rushed, uninspired example of Illustrator's power with Dimensions' features.

My Best,

Gare

Default Hey, Welles!

Welles,

I'm in therapy, alright

What are you doing up at 7:30 am Pacific Time? [confused]

Hey, did you hear that Apple might enter into negotiation w/ Intel to product a next generation of processors? I, for one, would welcome this for a number of reasons, to wit:

?Binary compatibility of the chipsets would enable more PC users to adopt the Mac OS.
? Developers could concentrate on inventing instead of porting.
?I could spend the money I don't have on software instead of hardware!

There would be some downsides, too...
?Apple makes fine hardware, albeit a tad pricey. Mac users might eventually go for less expensive fit and finish on their hardware, thus erroding Apple's hardware revenue base. Maybe this wouldn't happen, though, because of user loyalty...I can't see a Macintosh user buying a Dell box, for example.
? The Adobe Syndrome-less competition tends to shaft the end user.

My Best,

Gare

| ...okay Welles and Gare...at least I tried.
I liked it though (no accounting for my own taste I suppose ). I used PS Elements 2.0 for this = it's all I've got installed on this old puter I use for internet connections only. Thought I'd try cooking up something with it for fun. I don't have any added plugins (haven't yet even added any plugins onto my PSCS on my other puter used for artwork). I just used painted layers and adjustments of them for this and the logo letters.

I can't say I know anything about acid flashbacks either, [confused] other than what's been described by others about such things....I was in a very very small minority in my high school who DIDN'T try any sort of recreational drugs. No particular reason, just contrary I guess. Still am.

Default Raven--

Raven--

You didn't post it! Please try again!

I immersed myself in psychedelic art in the 60s; Peter Max, et al, but the only recreational drugs I use are Tylenol and Preparation H.

...I just think stoned.

Gare

Haw I'm almost always up at 5:00AM. I love the early morning to the perplexity of those who like night life.

Sure, I follow the Apple/Mac saga on a daily basis. My take on the issue is the talks were more likely to put a fire under IBM than switch to Intel, although Intel is coming up with a line of portable processors which are highly energy saving as they are designed to turn off parts of the processor when not directly being used. Personally, if Mac were going to an Intel type X86 processor for the desktops, I'd rather have them use AMDs.
