Default wireless networking question

yeah, the Wireless Internet Connection thread was closed, so I have to open this up.

here's the deal - WEP-based security, 10 character hexadecimal password. having difficulty getting my mother's PC, using a Linksys Compact-G USB Network Adapter to connect; after I put in the WEP key, it hangs on the screen where it says "Waiting for [wireless network name] to connect..." or something like that. the status bar associated with this is that green one that doesn't actually show percentage completed, but instead has 3 or 4 "bars" cycling through as the computer negotiates until it dies.

what do I do to fix this terrible, terrible mess?

have reset and restarted PC/router/network adapter; no chance to repair connection because it just sits there interminably on the "waiting..." screen.

Try WPA authentication instead.

I had that before, but that's what caused the TiVo to go on the fritz - its networking capabilities don't extend to that.

are MAC addresses permanent? if so, I'm willing to turn off the security and just allow specific MAC addresses.

hahaha, turned off security altogether as a prelude to filtering MAC addresses and now the computer still won't connect to the unsecured network

what a piece of ****.

Does the Laptop freeze when trying to connect to the router?

Mine did this last week, i had to remove the router/access point from my list and redo it again.

View Available Wireless Networks > Change order of preferred network > Delete the Access point your trying to connect to.

Then reboot. Worked for me.

pretty sure it's the adapter itself.
