Kids do stupid things, I remember throwing rocks at each other at 9, 10 years old too. I remember putting on 3 layers of clothes, winter coats, and welding masks in the middle of the summer at that age so that we could hunt each other with BB guns...generations of kids now at least have paintball now.

that evokes hunting metaphors but it's not such much that otf is a big jearm game park, it's more that it's a big jearm barrel.

I don't think there is a perfect solution. I think the criminal justice system is probably based around

-Punishment (Punish the specific crime)
-Deterrence (Deter people from committing the offence in the first place)
-Rehabilitation (Change them for the better)
-A feeling that justice has been done (by the victim and society in general)
-Isolate the bad people from the rest of society

Deterrence does not work perfectly. In some countries they whip, execute, torture and cut off limbs. But people still commit crime.

Rehabilitation seems hard to do in practice.

Community service in theory means you are doing something constructive for the community. Weekend detention in theory means that you continue on with a normal life so you don't get institutionalised. There is also free counselling, education and drug treatment.

The supposed idea of prison is that you reflect on what you have done and change. But in reality you would just sit there bored all day, be focused on the routine of prison life and mix with other criminals. And come out roughly the same person as before.

I think the easiest solution is usually to isolate the criminals from everyone else by building more prisons.

I am not sure whether there are any suitable uninhabitated islands.

Bert suggested a variation on that. Where you would send them to a third world country to help build infastructure.

Positives

- They would have the feeling of building and creating.
- Pick up skills in construction and teamwork
- Puts them in a new environment
- Not being bored in prison. Instead working all day.

Negatives

- Hard to control the prisoners
- Maybe they will have negative impact on the local population
- Work programs and chain gangs have been done before
- Maybe they will exploit the process (create powerful gangs and a dystopia)
- Unlikely to ever happen due to political reasons and idea being too revolutionary.

It is also hard to say whether it will any real impact on them. You know how corporations send staff on adventure courses or development days.

Does that have any impact on them or is it well intentioned waste of time?

I think generally it is hard to change someone.

The bastards would probably just spend all their time becoming good at sport instead of being rehabilitated.

seriously take some advice for once in your life-
i really have been insulted by people far more adept, eloquent and vastly superior to you intellectually (lets face it its not hard but they were) but fair play you have got one thing, you're possibly the user on here with the worst insults

anyway haven't you got a National Curriculum assessment you should be preparing to fail soon?

(p.s. once again i'll mention it as you seem far too dense to remember it but length of post does not = mood or your importance)
