Maybe the battery being dead prevented a sufficient enough surge carrying over the entire internal structure.

My iPod unexpectedly went doolally over the weekend, then I turned it on again earlier today in the hope that it had recovered itself only to discover it had wiped out all the songs I had on there instead.

Couple of hours later - it is still playing but the volume is on full constantly - good for the car no so good for headphones.
