I don't do lots of risky surfing, but I run spybot/adaware once a week and they always find something. Consider them absolutely necessary.

I never had a virus, figures it doesn't hurt to have a scanner running though.

Clearly you can avoid alot by not going on certain sites, but that doesnt stop legit sites getting hijacked. I got a virus once by just doing a search (not clicking any links) in google groups
