Or get someone else to take one out in their name who could get 5k and then pay them back. They'd have to be pretty trusting, though.

yeah, doubt you'll get a credit limit on a card above £2k. Whats your current overdraft limit? Natwest will give you a £2k interest free overdraft as a graduate for one year if you switch to them. After which it goes down to £1k and then £500.
If you started applying for jobs now though you should be able to get yourself an actuary job (assuming your interviews go well) to start next september by the end of the year. Are you dead set on the midlands though as I'd have though there will be a lot more jobs down in London. I myself was very apprehensive about moving to London but having done it it turns out it was an amazing decision and I don't know why I ever doubted it.
