I think it's far more likely a coincidence than what you're suggesting, which is that a referee who has made it to the top league in thos country is so open to suggestion that two words from Gerrard made him change his mind. given the pressure refs are put under by players chasing them all over the pitch, he'd be changing his decision 50 times a game if that was all it took to sway him, based on that logic.

...But it'd be incredibly s**t for our chances if we were to lose. It's not another game where we can realistically afford to lose points.

Ofc, that's not ideal.
But it isn't "must win".
After it we have two winnable home games and a winnable away game. If we fail to win tonight then Besiktas at home will be must win, and probably the following two as well.
