I never look at dates. I cooked some chicken last night and was throwing away the packaging and noticed it had to be eaten in July. I feel fine though! |

i always look at dates. 8 years ago i ate an out of date sausage roll. I had food poisoning for 2 weeks.
never again have i ignored a best before date label.

I take alot of notice of them, probably take it to the extreme aswell with certain foods.

Display until can be ignored.
You need to take notice best before somewhat, although with tin foods it usually just effects the taste and quality.
Use by MUST be taken notice of. Most food can be spoiled at least 6 hours before any bad smells/ugly looking mould can be spotted, and you can still get full blown food poisoning from it.

I dont' understand people worrying about the date with milk. I just smell it and if still in doubt, poor a small amount and taste it. The dates are completely irrelevant as if you leave milk out next to a window for a few off, it will often go off despite it being a few days before the use by date.

| Well yes, that's because the use by date is to be used together with the storage instructions on food.
As i said before, food can still smell/taste ok despite being spoiled - bacteria can be there in a large enough quantity to cause illness without any noticeable effects on the food.
