Bizarrely, the exact same thing happened to me the last time I went to a Morrisons. (Aside from the chance it was the same store on the same day) maybe this is their standard mode of operation and they just pretend the systems are down?

It certainly isn't there standard mode of operation, if the amount of time it took the checkout staff to get their heads around the tricky concept of sliding the handle across to make them work was anything to go by.
