Seems to work fine on the continent, which suggests to me that it's as much that we haven't figured out how to do it properly rather than it being a flawed concept in principal. Which may be as much down to British managers not being used to hand over control of any aspect of the job. And more than that, seemed to work fine at Tottenham when it was Arnesen, someone who both had the knowledge to do the job, and worked closely with his manager. </BLOCKQUOTE>

erm. it worked last season and I don't think its not worked. The main reason Jol has deserved to go is refusal to adapt or change his tactics, making poor decisions at the wrong times during games, not dropping under performing players and shwoing himself up tactically against the top clubs and in big matches.

Thats the reason he is out of a job not because of Commoli, or any DoF.

The treatment of Jol, plus two long serving employees is disgraceful. And he's done it in such a gutless manner.

Yes, Jol didnt have the necessary experience and mentality to take us to the next level, but no-one deserves to be stabbed in the back like that.

Real Madrid employ a director of football don't they? And they've hardly been unsuccessful over the years. Although i don't know how long they've been using that system. Or how much say the DoF actually has, compared to the club President or whoever...

doesn't every single one in Spain have one? Barcelona have one, i'm sure of that. I really think we are one of the last countries in Europe not to tack onto this DoF.

Yeah meant to add on in what capacity they were successful as well. With regard to Spurs it sound like the DoF was mainly buying players for the manager, but I’m not sure how many other clubs have pulled that off.

Don’t know how long Real Madrid had one for, but seem to recall them signing a galactico a season and winning pretty much naff all then started buying lesser known ‘good’ players (defenders) and they won the league.
