Very sensible attitude imo, so you won't go far wrong

I do think Fords often provide a good balance overall. Newer ones are pretty reliable, and the parts are cheap as chips. Not very 'prestiguous' and there are lots of them out there... but financially a good choice imo. </BLOCKQUOTE>

Basically my financial situation is that I am going to be doing a legal course in York that will cost me about £8,500 from September 2007.

I have most of that saved, but will need a professional studies loan as well for living/travel expenses which can be between £5-£25k, so the car money would come out of there. Naturally while I could go and get the £25k and blow it all, I'm not that stupid, but at the same time I wouldn't mind paying a little bit more if it would be beneficial.

The cars in category one will generally be cheaper/the cheapest cars. Superminis etc which are usually only about £6-7k brand new.

They do tend to hold their price in the 2nd hand-market though (as they're popular first car choices). The site I linked to earlier (for the car insurance brackets) is a reasonable guide to pricing for each car model. You can buy the Parkers Guide in WHSmith for a couple of £ in the mag section - which is probably more convenient for browsing.

Don't listen to the scouser either - they never buy cars (why buy when they can steal) or get insurance (they stole the car in the first place so if they get nicked they're screwed anyway).

Guess I'll have a trawl through later then, like I say it's not urgent, just trying to give myself an idea of what I'm letting myself in for.

Cars are a huge expense fella... buying them and insurance is only a small part of it. I never realised til I got one!
