I thought that I could just take some anti-inflammatory and keep it iced and elevated. That requires no doctor. I know several physical therapists, and could probably get all kinds of rehab advice and help for free. Since I am sure that I don't need surgery, I don't know what a doctor could do besides charge me money and tell me to keep it iced and elevated while taking anti-inflammatory.

You live somewhere where healthcare is chargeable, even for a GP consultation?

If it's not that bad, the RICE stuff should be enough. I strained ligaments in my ankle. Followed the RICE stuff for 48 hours and it was fine. I was able to play football 6 weeks later without any problems or having to go to physio (although I do now as my ankle is out of alignment which has resulted in me having tendonitis in my knee).

Actually, physios recommend a revised version of that treatment pattern:
C ompression
R est
I ce
E levation
It only works best if applied IMMEDIATELY after injury though. The day after is only good for warm/cold treatment and elevation to reduce swelling and stimulate white blood cell circulation and function.

Brazil is a wonderful place, but the health care system leaves something to be desired.
After the game last night I got the standard Brazilian advice: ice it and drink some beer.
