Well, the thing is that of the four up high noone would defend. Certainly not Henry or Ronaldinho (messi is a whole different story, he doesn't know how to defend but he runs to cover all the space he can, being it defending or attacking)
To rely on just the right and left backs to defend against teams with wingbacks and wingers, would be suicidal. To say the least. Barcelona would be toast against any team with decent players on the wings.

Also you say Messi/Eto'o are the ones likely to be dropped?

not exactly dropped. Rotated. Lots of matches to play, four guys for three spots, and one of them is almost certain that will play for sure (ronaldinho). Messi is the most probable candidate (IMHO) for several reasons. he's got quite a bit of problems with injuries, for starters, it seems that every time he plays a lot of matches in a row he ends up with an injury of some sorts. He's also the candidate for 2nd time changes with Henry, because being hte most explosive player in the team, he's the one whose playstile more suffers when he starts to feel tired.
With Ronaldinho, Eto'o and Henry I would think the deployement would be Eto'o in the right wing (cutting to the middle), Henry on the left one (doing the same) and ronaldinho up front in the middle, stepping a bit back to get balls and play them to those two.
Eto'o will be certain to be replaced at least for 1 month because of the Africa Cup. In cup matches I can bet almost for sure he'll be in the bench and Henry as the starting striker.

It's well known that Ronaldinho has been fairly poor recently, plus Henry prefers to play from the left, so would he not be the more likely person to be left out of the team?
|
Ronaldinho has scored 21 goals in La Liga. One can hardly call that "to be fairly poor".
His playstile has suffered a lot, that is true, because of his wildly extravagant way of training (ironic mode /off).
This year he lacked the amazing acceleration and pace that was his personal trademark, but he still has done matches worth a legend, and scored goals worth seeing one million times (the overhead kick against Villarreal was nothing short of Van-Basten-esque, coming from a playmaker, it says a lot, isnt it?).
The bottom point is that even completely out of phisical shape Ronaldinho is the best player of barcelona just because of sheer quality and class. And it seems next year he won't be out of shape: he has given up playing the America Cup to get his first summer holidays in 4 years, and has vowed to train the hardest he can to recover his fitness.
Mark my words: If he complies with his word (and I trust him in doing so, for if he doesn't he's the greatest liar in the world) next year's ronaldinho might be the best ronaldinho seen so far. I've never seen a leading star with such a self-motivation as the one Ronaldinho has shown in the latest interviews he has given to the spanish media...if he fullfit his promise to work hard to get his shape up again, he will be non-stoppable...
and impossible to get out of the 1st team
