Default The state of the UK housing market at the moment ?

Chaps

Just wondering if we have any housing market experts out there ? The wife is kind of getting itchy feet (again). We've almost moved a couple of times in the past couple of years, but never did for one reason or another. I think I've managed to persuade her to wait until the New Year, given that we've had a stressful enough year at it is, without more upheaval. Therefore I was just wondering how the housing market is at the moment, and what is the short/mid/long term forecast ?

If you aren't renting now, then it doesn't really matter what the forecasts are. I'd have thought the last thing you need right now is more stress though.

are you simply talking about whether prices will go up or down??? The answer to that is that in the longterm prices should go up.

The short term?? Well the market is kind of slowing down at the moment, a combination of house prices being so high and the cost of borrowing going up.

A lot will depend on what happens to interest rates in the next few months.

If you are a homeowner of course it matters if you are trying to sell a house??

Nope - we have our own place. Ideally we'd shift up to my hometown (Bedlington) - it's where we both fancy eventually. We'd hopefully get something a bit cheaper to free up a bit of equity to pay a bit of the mortgage off and also a couple of other bits and bobs.

You are right though - I keep telling her that we need a couple of months just to get on a level footing again, before we make anymore big decisions. I guess she is just looking for something else to get her teeth into at the moment. I'll have to keep on reining her in.

If you're buying and selling at the same time it doesn't matter; unless you're trading very up, you won't be under any more financial duress.
