Me: Chief Judge's chambers, Nicholas speaking. Journalist: Hi, this is such-and such from so-and-so [newspaper]. I see you have a matter of Crown v âTâ in the list today.
Yes. What's that about?
[reads charges] Oh, so there's a lot of money involved then.
[reads monetary amount] That's not much. So the name is changed just for that?
Well, no, we don't conceal the names just because of the seriousness of the crime. Why is it changed then?
Well...obviously there were some concerns that naming the accused in a public list would be a security issue, and an application was made to remove the name from the list. The judge thought that would be going too far, so just the name was changed. Why?
Like I said, having the name in the public list was considered to be a security risk. Yes, but why is naming this person a risk?
Well...if I told you that, it would kinda defeat the purpose of the order. Did they inform on a co-offender?
Look, I really can't... Were there co-offenders?
No, there... So what is this person involved in, then?
I told you, I can't... Don't you believe in freedom of the press?
It doesn't matter what I think. This is an order of the judge. We have a right to report on this, you know.
There's lots of cases where reporting is limited or prevented altogether. This is in the public interest.
You don't even know why the name was changed! It's not right that the freedom of the press is limited like this.
It's not done lightly. There's a good reason why... So it's not changed for these matters, then.
I really shouldn't be... Only the name is changed.
That's right. So you can tell me why.
Well, not if it gives you information that identifies the person or what they were involved in. So they were involved in something sensitive in, then?
Obviously, or the name wouldn't have been... So what was it?
I've TOLD you, I can't... Well, we intend to be in court.
You can do that, but you won't be able to report the name. Why not?
If it can't be published in a list, then of course you can't use it in a story. We'll see about that.
Um...you do realise breaching a suppression order is a criminal offence? So there's no freedom of the press then.
Look this wasn't done lightly. Like I said, there's a security risk... [Hangs up]
Most journalists are okay, but I'm going to hang up the next time I hear this one.
