Default Transparancy? How?

Hello all, this looks like a wonderful site and forum. I hope to learn much from you, as I have just purchased Photoshop 7.0.

Anyways, I have a problem with getting transparant backgrounds to work. I know they can be saved with .gif and .png files, but sadly that does me no good. What I'm trying to do is make an image that I can use with Littek's Talisman V2 (basically a windows shell). Anyways, the only file types I have access to is .bmp .jpg and .jpeg. I know this can be done because they have examples with images with transparent backgrounds, but they are saved as .bmp. Anyway, when I try to look at them with photoshop and GIMP all I see is the image with a hot pink background. I've also notice that icons and .exe file images also have transparant backgrounds and when viewed show hot pink.

To cut this short, does anyone have a solution for me?

Thank you,
Zokus.

a hot pink background
Yup... that's the standard BMP transparency colour. Generally any program that uses the BMP format is capable of understanding that the hot pink is to be rendered invisible.

Is this some kind of a problem for you in what you want to do?

TIP: to make sure you get the exact fucia colour open one of those BMPs in PS and sample the colour.

PS: Welcome to the community. We hope you enjoy your stay. [honesty]

Thank you for your welcome, and sorry about the double post.

I guess I never tried to just use that color to make the transparancies, and I am glad that it isn't a complicated procedure or anything. The color isn't a problem, I just didn't know that particular color would be rendered invisible. Thank you again, and I'll be back next question!

Yep, I never knew that but being a Mac user BMP isn't encountered as a 'normal' file format. Now the question I have is what are the RGB values of that Hot Pink? Is there slop, such that you get relative transparency if your color is Luke-Warm Pink? [slick]

I don't recall the exact RGB values Welles, but it's a 'pure' fucia for sure.

And no, no semi-transparency is possible. You need PNG for that and only a handful of Win apps use that format -- like the kind used to create OS skins.

Thanks, Mark. That's a tidbit of info which will get stored away in my mental *For Further Exploration* folder.

As I've found the color for that particular shade of pink would happen to be
Red: 255
Green: 0
Blue: 255

And yeh, .png files are quite a bit more useful.

Thank's Zokus! I use a Mac primarily so I only use the BMP format occasionally but I'm always interested in tidbits like this.
