I think I got around £1-£1.50 until I got myself a job at the tender age of 12.

Between the ages of about 8-13 (1984-1989) I used to get £1 a week, eventually I got fed up with it, as my mates were getting about £5 a week, that I got myself a job on Saturday mornings working with the local milkman delivering milk, he used to pay me £12 for the Saturday. I also used to work for him during the holidays and he'd pay me £20 a week which was a lot for a 13 year old boy in the late 1980s, I worked for him up until I started my exams and when I finished them I got myself a proper a job.

I started getting pocket money, about £5 per week. From age 11-13 or 14 at which point I got a job (paper round) and the money stopped. We were always encouraged not to spend money and instead save it. By the time I was 18 I had nearly 2k in the bank from jobs alone.
I guess the mentality in our family was a lot different to what yours is Ed. Success wasn't ever rewarded, it was expected. We were brought up to be "successful" as such. When I got my Standard grades (6 1's and 2 2's) I remember my dad was quite disappointed!
My mum and my dad especially made a bit of a hash-up of their education and made sure we didn't go the same way.

i got £120 a month which enabled me to basically live like a king through secondary school, really not sure why they thought i needed that much in hindsight.
