the samsung one has 3 HDMI which is good and contrast is good but the response time is 8ms which is the minimum to look for.
Samsung 37M87 was around £700 I would imagine.

I have an AIKO LCD 32 inch. Great buy. Uses an LG/Phillips panel too.

| Don't place too much emphasis on the response time mate. Sharp are one of the only manufacturers that have a lower response time than 8ms, and motion tracking isn't particularly better than it's rivals. It's good, but all of the top branded sets are knocking out decent sets now that track motion pretty well. The problems you get with motion blur and ghosting on LCD's isn't only determined by the lack of good resonse time.
The bets sets for motion tracking and image processing aren't the ones that have the lowest response time.
When I looked for my 37" LCD, I nearly bought the Sharp 1080p set, but I preferred how the Samsung looked... better blacks, better inputs. It was close though.

Are Sony Bravias the best in terms of performance (if not cost)?

Sony in general are priced a bit higher than the rest, but in terms of picture processing, build quality etc they're one of the best, aye.
That said, it does depend on the specific model of Bravia. They're not always the best.

| I'm looking to get a 50" (or more) LCD TV (maybe a Bravia). Is there much point at the moment? Does the picture quality suffer badly at that size?

Surely at that size you'd be better off looking at a plasma tv? LCD isn't a great performer over 42" or so (by comparison).

Aye, I'd consider a Plasma at that sorta size, definately. Especially since the 1080p Plasmas are starting to appear at a better price point.

I dont that much about the tvs and I am sure you know more than I do. I have seen a quite a lot of tv's under 8ms. I linked a tv earlier in the thread that was 6ms but the contrast ratio was not as high as the samsung not sure what number you should be looking at really, i think 1200 is the minimum to go for.
I play games and like to watch football which is why I keep looking at the response time. I keep thinking Samsung is a budget make as there has to be a reason why they are so much cheaper although saying that I think Philips use Samsung screens.
I want to but a new tv next year because I want a 1080p and also I thought 32" would be far too big for my room but I think I can get away with around 50" as the viewing distance is 12ft, what would you recomend? I was looking at a few Panasonic or Sharp as the Pioneeer is out of my price range as i would only spend around £1700. I wont buy one untill next summer at the earliest so hopefully the prices will drop further and there will be even more sets out there with at least 3 HDMI.
I paid £1500 for my 32" tv ahbout 2 years ago RRP was £2500 which would have bought me a full hd set now days around 52" |

As I mentioned, response time is a factor, but the best TV's don't necessarily have the fastest response time. There are loads of other factors involved.
Tony, I bought my Samsung (8ms) ahead of the Sharp (6ms) and I primarily watch sport and play games on my TV. I compared the Sharp and Samsung side by side, and still went for the latter. You'll rule out some excellent sets if you only look at the response time. Bear that in mind.
Samsung hit a decent point between quality and affordability at the moment. They use the same panels as Sony (they share a production plant) and they review well across the board. When I looked at the 37" 1080p sets, the Samsung was better than all others that I looked at.
For the record, Philips and LG have a joint venture company so they produce their own panels.
Not sure what a 50" set will look like at 12ft, but to give you some idea, I sit 6ft away from my 37". To be honest, different brands lead the way with different size TV's, so there's no hard and fast rule as to which is the best. You may want to look at Plasma if you're getting a TV that size, but I'm not clued up on what's good in that sort of price range.
I guess what I'm saying is, decide what size TV you want and then do some research as to what the leading sets are and create a shortlist. Then try and see as many of them through a number of sources as you can.
I decided I wanted a 37" 1080p LCD, so I shortlisted the Samsung, Sharp and Toshiba sets. The Samsung had better specs, and had the best picture quality so I went for that despite it being more expensive than the Sharp and Toshiba.
Just to add, AV forums can be a minefield of information, but it's worth checking out if you can stomach weeding through all the gumpf.
