Separating the journey up costs £17.50 to Manchester. where as if you book it direct its £23.

Mate of mine got local buses from Durham to London once. Reckoned he saved a good couple of quid that way.
That was years ago mind, perhaps it wouldn't work out cheaper now.

National Express, using funfares - £13 or £12.
Have to book to get to separate tickets though.
Birmingham 15:00 - Manchester 18:05 = £7
And then:
Manchester 18:20 - Leeds 19:25 = £6
or
Manchester 19:30 - Leeds 20:35 = £5

Birmingham to Leeds Single = £34.50
Splitting it into three separate Cheap Day singles (Bham -> Derby -> Sheffield -> Leeds) = £25.30
With a young persons railcard (which all good students should have) = about £17
