Also, how reliable are they and you to them?
Are you there 24/7 should a call come through that they need your help? Would they be there for you?
If they screwed you over could you forgive them?
How many of you have best mates that have been there as long as you remember?
If you move away from where you grew up have you still stayed best mates, or when you get together now does it seem like every time is reminiscing?
I'm hugely unreliable because of general poor health.
Yes on the 24/7 thing, as long as it was within the realms of possibility.
He's not screwed me over but I screwed his ex with his blessing - not as weird as it sounds, honestly.
My best mate (Ian) is 5 months older than me and we've known each other since before we can remember. He used to live one-but next along from my old house. He lives down in Coventry now and we see each other a couple of times a year. He was best man at my wedding, back in July. Top lad.
Fell out with my best mate of 20 years, a couple of years ago, over a girl. He lives in another country now, but considering the circumstances, he hardly behaved like a best mate.
Shame, seems I missed his wedding and he'll miss mine. We went through a lot but I'm glad I find out what I did as I realise now he wasn't trustworthy, which is pretty essential criteria for a best mate, IMO.
