In 1976, he was criticized for re-enacting the bombing during an appearance at a Harlingen, Texas, air show. As he flew a B-29 Superfortress over the show, a bomb set off on the runway below created a mushroom cloud.

He said the display "was not intended to insult anybody,"
haha, what an absolute ****

Not that he should feel guilty or anything, but it tells something about the animal origins of the human psyche that a soldier in the trenches may kill one guy with a bayonet and have nightmares for the rest of his life while this guy slept soundly after killing thousands.

Though to be fair, I imagine it would be a lot easier to deal with dropping a bomb and killing a bunch of people as opposed to killing someone and looking them in the eyes while you do it but maybe thats just me. And Paul Tibbets.

Yeah, it's not a rational thing, it's instinctive disgust-like mechanisms. Artillery and bombing are practically guilt-free.

It was a crazy period.

I think it is fortunate that nucleur weapons were not discovered a decade earlier. Just imagine if they were available in the 1930s.

If there was not a WW2, would there still have been stability among the major European countries from the 1940s onwards?
