I'm not so ignorant as to think that theoretically a party cannot evolve over the space of 40 years. However, considering that there seems to be regular occurances of members of the Tory party making slip ups of this nature, i'd suggest this issue is one that is very difficult for them to move away from, no matter how much some of the party wish for them to do so.

I was trying to find the right term for somebody of relative electable levels within the party as opposed to merely a member of the party which could mean johnny nobody who is merely one of the people who goes to the conferences. Apologies for not being so clear on that.

I mean of a stature big enough to actually be considered to serve the party whether in local local or national government. Would hardly call that a low stature.
