Let's just hope they don't make me subject everyone to a vicious tirade of abuse again for 3 weeks before getting the message. I'm a lovely bloke deep down and it's just not me.

my grandma is 75 odd, moved to this country from India in 1961, cant speak any english and doesnt want to learn. yet she got a job at a factory and always paid the bills. She came into this country completely legally. Her son (my father) is a senior engineer at British Energy and I'm studying for a law degree in London.

Should she never have been allowed to come here? Should she be sent packing because she can't speak english? Are the effects shes had on this country detrimental?

And its not as if my family is a one-off example. All of my grandparents generation can barely speak any english, yet their children and grandchildren are affluent members of society, all contribute in some way. Enoch Powell was a racist, and nobody can deny that. I cant believe people are still using his ideology today. But then again this always happens when there is an influx of people into the country when we need them. It happened to indians and blacks in the 1960s and i guess its happening now to eastern europeans in the 2000s. I feel sorry for them that they have to go through this, in a way

Your grandmother may well have contributed. Problem is immigration as a whole didn't. Had we selected our immigrants it would all have gone according to plan, but it's turned into the mother of all goat-****s, and that's nothing to do with the race of anyone. So old Enoch may have been a racist, who knows? But people who quote his speech getting hounded out of their jobs is not a good thing. How can you have a debate when you make one side of it illegal?

I don't think being against immigration is necessarily to do with racism, more often an ignorance of economics and sociology.

In context I think it's the only way. If you want to encourage everyone to be management consultants or investment bankers someone's going to have to drive the taxis (personally I quite like the idea of driving taxis, anyway...)

Depends what you think he said. At the loosest you can say he said it would change the UK. Clearly it has. At the other end you really have to bring up the rivers of blood bit, which is more a distrust of social groups than it is particular races. On this side he's been proved largely wrong, and the only incidents that might prove him correct have more to do with de facto segregation and poverty.
