How can i fade out a layer? For instance if i have a football player standing on a football field, i want the bottom of him to start fading out at his legs, then his feet be almost invisible, but i want you to be able to see the field underneath him.
Thanks!

you'll need 2 images for this..
A picture of a football field and a picture of a football player.
put them in 2 different layers.
add a quick mask to your football player layer.
Then use a black to white gradient on the football player layer.

I completely understand what you are looking for.. That's why you apply a mask to the layer... The Black And White affect opacity (transparancy)
Please try suggestions before writing them off.

macmonkey is right noslenwerd.
But there's some confusion here because of the incorrect wording.
I think you're getting confused by how the Quick Mask uses a roset overlay. That's there to show you that a 'temporary' mask has been activated. That's why it's called "Quick Mask".
I think macmonkey meant to say a quick mask -- as in "add a quick layer mask". Not an actual "Quick Mask". A quick mask isn't needed for this effect. Just a normal Layer Mask; with a linear white-to-black gradient applied to it, vertically.
Hope that clears things up. :B

If you want the top part to be fully visible and only the bottom part gradually become invisible, you can use levels on the mask and, in this case, drag the light slider towards the middle.
Masks are like any other greyscale images. Only, they which pixels can be influenced rather than the image itself.

for some reason i think all the presets got all funky on me ...
What is the opacity supposed to be set at? I had trouble finding the black to white gradient, but i found it now, BUT I think something might be wrnog with my settings, can someone take a look at my screen show
(transparency is checked but i didn't get it into the screen shot)

opacity should just be left at 100%...
In your layers pallate highlight the football player layer ->
At bottom of Layers pallate click the bottom 2nd to left icon which is the mask ->
In your football player layer you should have 2 squares (one being the image and one being the mask) ->
Go to your toolbar and click and hold on the paint bucket and a little dropdown will show you the gradiant tool ->
Pick the gradiant tool and make sure up in the top preferences bar that the black to white gradiant is picked and then simply drag from top to bottom
If you get held up at any of these steps let us know.
Thanks
JW
