a) connection from the wall (most broadband goes through telephone line, etc) to your internet modem or router (the one that connects to your ethernet card in your PC via LAN/Ethernet cable, let's call it a MODEM for the sake of simplicity).
b) connection from internet modem to wireless router (via LAN/Ethernet cable) into port 1 or "line in".
c) correctly installed and configured wireless router (use installation CD and follow instructions).
d) at least three green lights (depending on amount of LAN connections) and blinking orange light (shows active connection) on both modem and router.
e) if all the above is sorted, then your wireless device(s) should be picking up your wireless connection.

Regarding b), I said the connection from my modem is a different sort of wire. It's not an ethernet cable and there the only ports on the router.
You can't connect a usb modem to a router, the only way to connect a stand alone modem to a router is via ethernet cable, this would require the modem to have an ethernet port.
If your belkin wireless router is an adsl wireless router then it has a built in modem thus you do not require the usb modem.
connect one end of RJ11 cable to the routers WAN port and the other end connect to a filtter (at least one should have come with the router) and then connect the filtter to the phone socket. If there was a phone connected to that phone socket then just connect it to the phone socket on the filtter. Remember for every phone socket in your house you'll need to connect a filtter to it (so you may need to purchase more filtters).
For setting up the router, connect one end of the ethernet cable (RJ45) to the router and the other end to your pc.
So I realised I had the wrong router. I had the cable one when I needed the ADSL one. I have it wired upto my laptop, but I want it to be wireless. When I take all the wires out, it loses connection, like I thought it would. AM sure my laptop has wireless capabilities, I just don't know how to use them. I have read 'Ralink Wireless LAN card' at the bottom on the screen, is that the wireless bit?
