From Deansgate you can walk up Chester Rd which changes into a bypass meaning you have to walk on the gras embankment. Took me 35 ish minutes (walking fastish).

You can do it direct if you leave gatwick at 5.15am. Takes 4 and a bit hours.

I'd personally either go to Reading from Gatwick or Guildford , then it's about a 3 hour direct journey to Manchester picadilly.
Easy to get to Reading or guildford , both have direct trains.
