I'm not that old but I'm sure I recall a time when games were only released when they were finished. Perhaps I imagined that.

We had similar to compute over here. Think Crash had a few pages each month as well.
Those were the days.

Tbf to SI, the sports game side of the industry has pretty much moved towards yearly updates as a whole, with the recent addition of next generation machines the only reason we have seen a few new engines. The fact they are becoming "just like the rest", while disappointing, isn't all that surprising. It's a fairly cut-throat market, and risks are not generally encouraged. A mass "Hermanisation" about the only way to challenge this attitude, but even then you'd still get all the chump kids getting their parents to fork out £30-£40 a year every year. Just got to be more discerning which titles we buy nowadays.

| unsurprisingly, none of those games have been consistently unplayable out of the box.

You have a point, although I've heard the next gen offering of PES this year is fairly horrific, frame rate issues and stuff? Someone else can confirm no doubt.
Welcome to it Mr Bloom.

PES is rubbish online currently, according to a fair few reports. Interesting to note how many more people have bought Fifa this year in the 360 thread. Much more than before. And mags such as GamesTM actually rate the current Fifa higher than PES. Genuine competition, which will make it interesting to see what Konami try and pull next year.
