Still baffled by people's suprise at all this. Or maybe it isn't surprise, but comments like "reasonably playable out of the box" just seem bonkers to me. Should be expecting way, way more people.

I have found it reasonably easy to play out of the box and relatively bug-free. But then you have to factor your experience of gaming against mine (only ever buy CM/FM, only play in half-terms, weekends, for a couple of hours a day at most).
For the below-average games punter like myself, it is a lot easier to get into than previous versions have been. But that's not to say it isn't error-free.
And am I the only one in thinking that if it was any other business on any other communication forum, Miles would have had to at least offer a formal, public apology? </BLOCKQUOTE>
I think I probably play even less of the game than you (for comparison - I didn't pick up FM2005 until after the first patch, and only ever had one save which got to it's 6th season. FM2006 I picked up after the 2nd patch, and had one save although this actually got through 10 seasons. But that was because I never seriously played FM2007 at all).
I've got through one season on FM2008 so far. The first half of the season was irritating, with some of the well publicised bugs rearing their heads, but at least I felt in control of the gaming experience. I was confident in my signings, could see my tactics taking affect and could actually win games. After applying the beta patch, all my players were suddenly rubbish (according to ass man and coaches), tactical changes made no difference at all (even going to the extremes of the sliders for passing, mentality etc) and I felt completely out of control.
FM2008 is now back on the shelf, and won't come out again until either a patch is proven to be stable, or the December/January research exercise comes round. Whichever happens first.
It's a good job I didn't pay for this game, otherwise I think I'd be a little hacked off at the moment.
