I used to run my truck on 80% veg oil 20% diesel. In the winter i maved back to a 30% veg oil 70% diesel, as the veg oil thickens more in the cold and doesn`t move through the injectors.
I was having to fill in forms for the fuel tax which was a pain in the arse, but the oil was only 31p a litre, with tax at 29p on top of that.
Most diesels will work on veg oil, but its best to find out first, as some smaller 4 pot engines will not.
Biodiesel gives the same mpg and power as diesel will and runs cleaner with virtually no carbon emmisions at all. It will smell like you are cooking bacon/chips/burgers, but i prefer that smell to exhaust fumes.
You can mix your own biodiesel usung used chipfat, but the oil has to go through a filterbed which cleans down to 5 microns (I think) to be clean enough to go in your car. The biodiesel you buy at garages will never solidify in your car as its thinned out. If you mix your own, you have to be more careful in cold weather as it can thicken up and clog the injectors.
Yo uwill need to buy a couple of sets of fuel filters if you are going to use a large proportion of veg oil to diesel, as it works like fairy liquid to engines and pulls all the crap out into the filter with the first few fills.
Your Golf will work on at least a 50/50 mix of Veg oil to diesel no problem at all, but you do need to declare tax if mixing it yourself as you get your car confiscated if you don`t.
