| I think the stadium in Sydney is designed so that the lower tier can be removed to make room for a drop in track, I think that was the same plan for Wembley but it proved to much.
Plus we angered alot of people in the IAAF and IOC with COMS and the Pickets Lock shambles (when we were forced to give up the World Athletics championship in 2005 I think) , the powers that be seem to want a top notch athletics facility

Considering our best Athetlics facility currently is, what? Crystal Palace? I really don't blame the IAAF and the IOC making demands of this sort.

I like the stadium, it isnt overly elaborate. Should give a better atmosphere than most.

| well originally they were dead against a football club using the stadium. But with the success of the 02 and the fact that use for Athletics only would very limited, and not lucrative, they've changed their minds and said they'll consider the option.
It makes sense. They need to recoup the money somehow, and there's no better way then a guaranteed weekly audience from a football club.
I'm not working on the Olympics yet, so I've not got the full details. Most of my work is around the Stratford City development, which is the regeneration around the area where the stadium and Olympic village is. That's costing about 5 times what the Olympics is.

I keep reading bits and bobs about the Olympic Project in the NCE+ (New Civil Engineer).
Basically, it's taken too long to plan and due to the time constraints now in place, massive amounts of resources will be needed to make it, thus making it very expensive. Also, with the news that CrossRail is going ahead, there's going to be a lot of work for engineers and site labourers in what is already quite a strained labour market. Some people (in the magazine) are starting to question whether the government has bitten off more than it can chew. But it does mean that for the next 5 years no-one will be short of work.
All in all the Olympics should still make a profit for the country, but nowhere near the £9 billion margin the Government was expecting it to when they submitted a bid.

the whole "what the stadium can be used for" thing is, as is the norm in these matters, very confusing from what I've read. I'm taking Carter's view that the "primary" use for the place has to be athletics, but how you would actually measure that I'm not sure. Do all the meets on a Friday night, football on the Saturday?
But yeah, we'll take it if we have to move from Loftus, which I'd rather not do.

There really must be something about building stadiums in London and paying over the top for it. Lets just hope an Australian company doesn't win the contract...

| I'd say it's more of a case of if it were to be multipurpose and there were a clash when it came to events, that Athletics should take the priority.
