Girl, 18, dies in tree car smash

AN 18-year-old girl has been killed in a car crash which left three other teenagers injured.
The tragedy happened last night when a Ford Fiesta hit a tree in Whickham, Gateshead.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, which happened at 6.40pm on Fellside Road.
An 18-year-old boy was driving the car north between the Woodman’s Arms and Whickham Golf Club when police say, for reasons as yet unknown, it left the road, smashed through a fence and hit a tree.
Fire crews cut the driver free and he was taken to Gateshead’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he has undergone surgery for a broken leg.
His condition today was described as comfortable.
Two boys in the back of the car, aged 18 and 19, managed to free themselves from the wreckage, suffering only minor injuries.
They were both taken to the QE and are also said to be ‘comfortable’.
But the 18-year-old girl in the front seat had been trapped by her chest and legs. She also suffered head injuries and was taken to the QE, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrived.
Northumbria Police are not releasing the names of the four occupants of the car, but have confirmed they all come from the Dunston area.
Today, the only signs that remain at the crash site are some chalk marks and sand on the road and a demolished wire fence where the vehicle crashed through.
The collision happened on a straight downhill stretch just after travelling over the brow of a hill, a few hundred yards from the entrance to Whickham Golf Club.
Police are today trying to piece together what happened. They are examining the car and are waiting to speak to the driver and back seat passengers.
Sgt Nigel Dance, of Whickham Motor Patrols, said: “We are still trying to assess if any other vehicles were involved.”
“We know that a single vehicle has left the road, but what caused that to do so we cannot say, because we do not know. If there was any other vehicle involved, hopefully we will be able to trace it, but at this time there is no suggestion that there was.”
Three fire crews cut the driver and girl from the wreckage. The driver was trapped by his legs and was pushed up against the steering wheel.
Firefighters used cutting and spreading equipment to remove the roof and push back the dashboard to free him. They also removed the passenger side of the vehicle to rescue the girl. Watch manager Ian Horn, based at Swalwell Fire Station said: “It was a difficult operation because of the impact with the tree.”
