Default Are there rules about passengers drinking in cars?

Was thinking last night, as I drove to Newcastle while my mates were downing bottles in the back that I've never actually questioned the legality of it. Is there any prohibitions as long as I'm not drinking?

I don't think you're allowed open alcohol containers in cars, though that's probably just in some US states actually, not sure what the law is over here.

Are you basing that on something you have seen on TV by any chance?

Is it legal to drink in the street?

I only ask because before the NFL at Wembley, me and a mate had a six-pack and had them outside the ground. A fair few dodgy looks were sent our way but I was of the understanding that it's only illegal if you're being a drunken twat?

We were told that it is illegal to have a open beverage in a car that has the ignition on. I was breatalized (sp), i passed as i hadn't had a drop. They then let us go on our way but didn't do anything about the open bottles and didnt take them off us, go figure

This was just outside middlesbrough if its worth anything

When i went to Wembley everyone was drinking cans on Wembley Way

The non drinking zones are mainly town centres i think
