There aren't any (that I know of) self replicating virus that will harm your system without you giving them permission to do so. </BLOCKQUOTE>

What do you mean by "giving them permission to do so"? </BLOCKQUOTE>

There a trojens and such out there that need you to enter your password for them to function, no software can prevent that.

A mac may help you if you set it up right (there are plenty of really good books, websites and video tutorials out there), but maybe you just need to change how you use the computer, or rather find a better source for porn. </BLOCKQUOTE>

Any links to these tutorials that you recommend please?
Also no need for a computer to get porn my roomate works at a used CD/DVD store

Media editing stuff.

The two things that are most irritating are using ctrl and the mouse button to do a right mouse click and the fact that you use apple+xcv for cut/copy/paste. Keep hitting ctrl.

There's no such thing as a virus free computer - they are just programs. The issue is one of risk at the end of the day, and you are at far less risk with a Mac, so you're on the right lines. The point is, you should never be complacent. </BLOCKQUOTE>

So do I still need to buy an anti-virus for Mac or is it so rare that it's not really necessary? </BLOCKQUOTE>

No, not necessary.

As Asmodeus said, no, you just need to ensure the firewall is turned on and pay attention to programs that ask you to enter your password in order for them to install.

The first Mac trojan horse was discovered only a week ago, although you'd have to be kind of a moron to get stuck with it.

details here

As said above, if you use simple common sense (i.e., be careful about opening attachments and other programs you don't recognize) you'll be fine.

The only problems with Macs is that they're more or less idiot-proof, since most apps and hardware are basically plug and play. So you lose all of that 'working under the hood' knowledge that you may have built up from years of making sure drivers and such all worked. I doubt you'll mind after a while though.

And OSX &gt;&gt;&gt;&gt; Vista, from all accounts I've seen.

I would recommend getting Norton Utilities, since you can use this to recover files if you suffer a big crash, and do little maintenance things like de-fragging your hard drive.

Last but not least, you can run PC apps on your Mac. details That should help the transition.

I bought mine 18 months ago, I can't see me ever going back. So much less maintenance than Windows, less fannying about installing drivers and whatnot, defragging, running several adware/spyware/antivirus programs etc. Not crashed once, either. AND it looks pretty, which is the main thing.
